The expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to review and reflect on a topic, gather evidence, and set forth an analytical argument concerning that issue. This essay will use two articles from allsides or related news sources as its only sources.
Topics to choose are: January 6th Hearings, Gun Control, Inflation, Recession, or Abortion.
Your introduction must review the issue for the reader and incorporate a clear thesis statement that relates to your perspective on the issue.
Each body paragraph should be limited to the analysis of one idea regarding the topic. Please remember to include topic sentences, transitions, evidence, and analysis in each of your claims paragraphs. Body paragraphs can consider the following:
What does each source claim about the issue?
How does each source use evidence to support their claims about the issue?
Whether you agree with the article’s position or not, do you believe the article develops a clear and strong argument for their claims? Why or why not?
Who is the articles target audience? How do you know?
Your conclusion may briefly review the central claims, but not introduce any new information into the conclusion. Above all, you should attempt to bring together your claims and place the topic into a relevant context for the reader.
