Discussion Post 1

Discussion Directions
In order to earn full credit for this discussion, you must successfully complete tasks:

Respond to the following discussion question: In the documentary 13th, we witnessed various examples of the racial/ethnic oppression that exists in the United States and how this racial/ethnic oppression has developed over time. Is the disparity between people of different racial/ethnic groups primarily caused by institutional racism or individual racism?

Your answer must be 250-500 words long. You must write in complete sentences (no bullet points allowed).
You must answer the question, explain your reasoning, and provide some sort of justification (or proof). You can cite specific lectures, supplemental content posted to lectures (videos, links, readings), or external sources. The more references to class content you make, the better your answer will be. Your citation should be APA format (parenthetical citation in-text and a full citation at the end of your post). If you cite external sources, academic journals are preferred, but online news is okay, too (as long as it’s not a satire or conspiracy website). If you’re unfamiliar with APA format, check out this website from the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) that explains how to cite in APA. (Links to an external site.) You should use the drop-down menu on the left side of the page to learn more about in-text citations and how to craft your references list (click here for an image of the drop-down menu to which I’m referring).

Follow these additional guidelines:

Always use your own words and demonstrate your understanding of the class material. Do not plagiarize. If you do plagiarize, I WILL GIVE YOU A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT – NO EXCEPTIONS. It is very easy to avoid plagiarism – any time you borrow from someone else’s work, CITE IT. Err on the side of caution and cite EVERYTHING you use to help you in your answers and comments. Remember, you must cite even if you summarize someone else’s work. If you are quoting, be sure to use quotation marks.
Your references list does not count towards your overall word count.
You can’t edit or delete posts once you submit them. Do not submit your post until you are 100% confident you have checked the spelling, formatting, citations, etc. I wouldn’t recommend copy/pasting your posts from a text editor (like Word or Google Docs), as this often changes the formatting.
