Cut two circles of diameters 100 mm and 50 mm from a piece
of stiff cardboard. Fix the larger circle to a fl at surface using blue-tack
and place the smaller one touching it. Mark the point of contact on both
circles. Now roll the smaller circle around the circumference of the larger
stationary circle in the same way that a planet gear rotates around a
stationary sunwheel. Count the number of turns that the planet circle rotates
on its own axis whilst making one orbit of the sunwheel circle. Discuss, and
give a reason for your fi ndings.
