Theirefforts are centered around this 12-word honorcode: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or toleratethose that do.” New students receive 12 hoursof training on the code their freshman year, andcadets are in charge of administering the code.They conduct investigations, rule on violations,and oversee the code training program.There are seven components to the WestPoint character development program. First, allstudents have to take courses in ethics, psychology,and military law that introduce ethicalissues. Professors provide opportunities forstudents to practice ethical behavior throughunproctored exams and take-home gradedassignments. Second, faculty, administrators,and students provide values instructionthrough ongoing training programs taking placeover four years. Third, all students are requiredto participate in at least one contact sport andtake a swimming course to overcome personalfears. When it comes to intramural sports,demonstrating character is more important thanwinning. (It is possible to win a game and laterforfeit due to poor sportsmanship.) Fourth, fromthe sophomore year on, cadets are placed inleadership positions where they have to exercisemoral judgment and demonstrate virtues.Fifth, faculty and administrators are recruitedto be role models and are trained to focus oncadet character development. Sixth, studentsare assigned both academic advisers and professionalmentors. Seven, physical structures oncampus reinforce important virtues. Buildingsare named after successful graduates and thereare statues of George Washington, DwightEisenhower, and other role models. Plaques withthe names of Medal of Honor graduates are scatteredaround campus.Action learning is an underlying theme ofthe Academy’s character development efforts.Cadets are constantly placed in situations wherethey have to put their ethics into action—on theathletic field, in their leadership roles, in theclassroom, and in the dorm. Many cadets have been dismissedfrom the Academy for observing unethical behaviorbut keeping silent. However, a number of cadets reportthat obeying the nontoleration clause actuallyimproves relationships.
